RV Function 1

This station covers the evaluation of RV function. We will lo0k at visual evaluation, RV dimensions and RV Fractional Area Change (FAC%)

A. RV Dimensions (Basic)

  • Obtain the Apical 4 Chamber RV Focused View
  • 3 Dimensions are measured in this view, and end-diastole, from inner edge to inner edge.
  • RVD1 & RVD2 are measured parallel to the tricuspid valve annulus
  • RVD1 = Basal RV Diameter
  • RVD2 = Mid Cavity RV Diameter
  • RVD3 = RV Longitudinal Dimension

Normal Range:

  • RVD1 < 41mm
  • RVD2 < 35mm
  • RVD4 < 83mm

B. RV Dimensions (Advanced)

  • The proximal RVOT diemnsion is measured in the PLAX view
  • RVOT1 & RVOT2 are measured in the PSAX view at the aortic valve level
  • RV end diastolic area (RVEDA) & RV end systolic area (RVESA) are measured in the apical 4 chamber RV focused view in end diastole and end systole respectively.

C. RV Fractional Area Change (RV FAC%)

RV FAC%:

  • Obtain the Apical 4C RV Focused View
  • Measure RV end-diastolic and and end-systolic areas
  • RV FAC% = RVeda – RVesa / RVeda x 100
  • RV FAC% > 35% is normal
