When scanning the lungs, quite often 2 probes are required. The linear probe is used for scanning the lungs superficially. Deeper lung parenchyma is best visualized using a curvilinear probe.

A high frequency linear probe is best used for pleural scanning. The pleural line and sliding of pleura is better visualised with a high frequency probe. Depth is normally set to 5-8cm.
A low frequency curvilinear or phased array probe can be used for deeper scanning of lung parenchyma, posterior and sub diaphragmatic regions.
Hand held probes are often all in one probes and a single probe is used for scanning all organs of the body.
