Cardiac 1

A 75 years old man presents for urgent ORIF # Femur. He complains of SOB on minimal exertion and has a history of hypertension, smoking and type 2 diabetes. You perform a POCUS Cardiac Scan.

What are your findings ? What is the visual EF ? What methods of quantitative EF evaluation are you aware of ?

Answers

The patient has severe LV systolic dysfunction which could account for his limited exercise tolerance. The visual EF can be estimated at 10 to 15%. The quantitative methods that can be used for LV systolic function assessment include fractional shortening, fractional area change and E-Point Septal Separation (EPSS).
